Searching for information

It's holiday time but definitely I'm not enjoying my holiday... i have just finished rereading the novel Joss and Gold to see and analyze how the writer presented the male characters in her novel. As i have already know the story quite well, it was not a difficult job to scan all the information that i needed. The next thing that I have to do now is to read the other novel Sister Swing.

At last...

After struggling and cracking my brain for weeks, finally... I managed to finish the proposal paper. What a relief... The assignment has been submitted and now I have to crack my brain once more and start to do my research paper.

I had changed my mind about the topic of my research paper. Previously, I decided to write about the issue of feminity in Shirley Lim's novels. However, after a very critical thinking process, I decided to write about how she portrayed the male characters in her novels from her feminist perspective. Actually, I wanted to be different from others who usually write about the female characters and how they are depicted in the story.

I had also met my supervisor, Dr. Jayakaran and presented what I'm going to do for my research paper. He had approved my topic and said that it was interesting. I was relieved and happy that he said so because I could go on with the next stage of writing that paper.

This holiday, I had to prepare the first draft for that paper and sent it to my supervisor after the break. It means that this holiday is not a holiday anymore... Well, there is nothing to be done as this is the life of a student.

Due date… and another work load

Cik Siti entered the class with good news; the oral presentation for the proposal paper would be after the Chinese New Year’s break, but the complete written work should be passed up before the break. Still, it was good news as for these two weeks we were busy with the mid semester exam, and it was a challenge to complete this assignment and studying for the exam at the same time.

However, it did not mean that I had neglected this course. Nonetheless, I had to start thinking about my research paper. Unlike my other classmates, my group members and I had not had the chance yet to meet with our supervisor, Dr. Jayakaran, as he was busy with the coming MICELT. He would only be available after that conference, and I was still unsure about his expectation for this research.

For the research paper, I already had in mind of examining the issue of a new feminity in two Shirley Lim’s novels; Joss and Gold, and Sisters’ Swings. I hoped that Dr. Jayakaran would approve this idea because I really liked this issue. I found that as a feminist, Shirley Lim presented the woman characters in her novels as very boisterous, strong, and would not let anything come in their ways of achieving their goals and dream. This really caught my attention.

I’m really looking forward to see Dr. Jayakaran and presented my “case”, and I guess the other students who are under his supervision are also feeling the same. However, like the process of coming out with the proposal paper, this whole process of coming out with the research paper would be as challenging. I just hope that thing will just come out well.

Thesis statement and supporting details.

After my thesis statement has been approved, it was the time to come out with the supporting details. The process of coming out with these topic sentences is similar to the process of making out the thesis statement. Again, I had to crack my brain to come out with these supporting details.

Actually, it was not as difficult as coming out with the thesis statement as the main idea was already there. The thesis statement actually helped me to be on track so that my details in the essay would not be out of topic. For this proposal paper, I came out with five supporting details:
- As part of her revenge, Miss Havisham brings up Estella and nurtures her with the feeling of hatred towards men.
- For her own entertainment as well as her plan for revenge, Miss Havisham meets with her relatives every week.
- Miss Havisham finds amusement in letting Pip entertained her as well as befriended Estella.
- Miss Havisham’s passion for revenge shuts her from accepting the reality of her own life.
- Miss Havisham’s driving force for living comes to an end when her passion for revenge turns into regret and guilty.

After showing them to Cik Siti for approval, I started looking for textual evidences from the novel. As this process was completed, the hard work of composing the essay would follow. I hope to do this fast as the due date is coming nearer. Really hope that I manage to finish this assignment on time.
