Is it a tragedy?

Friday, 30 December 2005 was the first lesson I had for this course - an introduction to the world of drama and theatres, English of course. The two hour class was filled with the lecture on the history of drama from the time of Greek empire to the era of the modern day. From this first lesson, I learned about how drama evolved as it is today. The shift from the ancient to the modern day theatres was rather interesting to learn as I could learn dramas from various perspectives and world views. However, I had a feeling that it would be rather difficult to truly understand the drama from the ancient Greek time as it involved many Gods that really contradicted with my own belief. Although I had read King Oedipus, I still found it rather confusing and irrelevant.
On this first lesson, I was also introduced to the types of drama including tragedy, comedy, tragicomedy, and farce. Before this, I got the idea that every drama that ended with the death of the hero is considered a tragedy. However, after this first lesson, I knew that I was totally wrong. Tragedy and mortality are two different things and I hoped that I would not do the same mistake again in describing a situation as a tragedy or a fatality. As for comedy, it is quite easy to recognize this type of drama.
Overall, this first lesson in a way triggered my curiosity to learn more about drama although at the first place, I did not really like this genre. I hoped that this would be an interesting course.

Faizah,I totally agree with you. Everything seems to be messed up during the first lecture about drama. All the terms that were used in drama were completely unfamiliar for me. It does take time for me to really comprehend it. I never thought that it would be as complicated as this. However, with Dr. Edwin guidance and his patience in teaching us, now I can understand it better. All of us for sure can obviously notice his patience in delivering his lecture about those strange terms. At the beginning most of us I guess, quite hard to understand some sentences from the text. We can’t even laugh when it comes to jokes and he had to explain it in detail. Till then we knew that it was actually a joke :)

Hye Faizah…As what you have mentioned, ‘I had a feeling that it would be rather difficult to truly understand the drama from the ancient Greek time as it involved many Gods that really contradicted with my own belief. I know that it is quite difficult for you to understand the drama as it has more than one God and contradicted from our belief. But for me, I take it as new knowledge of the world and I feel really excited knowing about this information and I really want to know more about the Gods in depth. For example, Zeus, who is believed to have mortal children and that’s really shocked me as from my believe God cannot have affair with human! But that rather interesting..
As we know that Greek drama basically dramatise their way of life and way they believe is right and what is wrong. So, to make us understand their drama, we ourselves should understand their way of life and their beliefs.
